Post lot text PIERRE-PAUL PRUD'HON, CUPID REMOVING HIS QUIVER, PASTELAccording to Chennevières, this drawing in pastel, a technique that Prud’hon rarely employed, 'looks like a real Corregio' (op. cit., 1890, p. 304). It is a preparatory drawing for a painting by Constance Mayer (1775-1821), a student of Prud’hon who eventually became his life companion: Innocence Preferring Love to Riches, exhibited in the Salon of 1804 (St. Petersburg, Hermitage Museum, inv. 5673). In the Prud’hon sketch, Riches, personified by an elegant woman in profile clothed in a red dress, offers her treasures to Love and Innocence (Art Institute of Chicago, inv. 1933. 1090). There is also a drawing of the group of figures (Chantilly, Musée Condé, inv. 502; N. Garnier-Pelle, S. Laveissière, Pierre-Paul Prud'hon dans les collections du musée Condé, Chantilly, Paris, 1997, pp. 18-19). The dancing, smiling cupid, for which this pastel is a study, appears next to Love. The Louvre has two of Prud’hon’s pastels similar to the current composition in its collection: the image of Riches in profile, almost identical to the one shown in the painting by Mayer (inv. 32 587; Laveissière, op. cit., 1997-1998, n°120), and the bust of Innocence (inv. RF 416).
