Post lot text PIERRE-PAUL PRUD'HON, MARK OF NAPOLEON, BLACK CHALK, STUMP, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, OVALPierre-Paul Prud’hon painted the portraits of several members of the imperial family, starting with Napoleon. Laurent Dabos reused the present drawing in a larger composition, which was subsequently engraved by Tardieu and Aubert. The engraving differs slightly from the drawing, notably the presence of a crown of laurels and stars surrounding Napoleon's head, from which rays of light emanate. In the lower part of the engraving, two eagles hold a standard with ‘Napoléon le grand’ [Napoleon the Great] with a geographic map in the background, an allegory signifying the important position of Napoleon’s France in the world (De Goncourt, op. cit., p. 66, n° 23). A second version of this engraving from 1823, entitled ‘Hélas ! je ne viens point célébrer sa mémoire/ La voix du monde entier parle assez de sa gloire’ [Alas! I do not come to celebrate his memory / The whole world speaks enough of is glory] illustrates in the lower part of the composition the dead Emperor draped in a sheet, his body replacing several countries on the globe. The head of Napoleon, with its halo of shining rays of light, also figures in the composition (Paris, bibliothèque nationale de France, Cabinet des Estampes, cote DC37. T.5/ E 027959 et E027960).A replica of this portrait previously in the Walferdin collection, whose current whereabouts are unknown, was offered in a Paris sale on 18 May 1860, lot 112. It would have been created to decorate the furniture made for the King of Rome. Another copy is in the collection of the Petit Palais in Paris, given to the museum by Pierre-Amédée Pichot in 1921 (inv. PPD 1294).
