PIERRE PUVIS DE CHAVANNES, HEAD OF A WOMAN (PRESUMED PORTRAIT OF JEANNE DURAS), BLACK CHALK ON GREY PAPER
Thanks to a drawing of the same model, dated around 1883 and kept in the Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève of Geneva (inv. 1904-0008; see D. Radrizzani, ‘Dessins français. Collection du Cabinet des dessins du Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève’, in Dessins français. Collections du Cabinet des dessins du Musée d'art et d'histoire, Paris and Geneva, 2004, no. 75, ill.), the identity of the woman in the present work is known: she is Jeanne Duras, living at 26 rue Lautier, in the Châtelet district of Paris. The two drawings suggest Puvis planned to use them for a painting (A. Brown Price, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, The Artiste and His Art, New Haven and London, 2010, pp. 120-121). On the back of the drawing, an inscription by the notary Delapalme certifies that the work comes from the artist’s estate.
