HENRI-JEAN-GUILLAUME MARTIN, MATERNITY, BLACK AND RED CHALK, STUMPING ON CREAM PAPER
The present drawing is a preparatory study representing a maternity, a theme dear to the artist. It can be compared with several of his compositions, including one of the paintings in the dining room of Doctor d’Herbecourt’s apartment in Paris, a landscape dated 1911 (Musée de l’Oise, Beauvais, inv. 78.24.1; see F.C. Coustols, Henri Martin, 1860-1943, exhib. cat., Cahors, Musée Henri Martin, and Toulouse, Capitole, 1993, no. 77, ill.).
