Further details

SIMON BUSSY, A COUPLE OF WOODCOCKS, PASTEL, ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER, MONOGRAMED
A pupil of Gustave Moreau, Simon Bussy developed a career as a painter and draughtsman between France and England. A landscape painter, it was from 1912 onwards that his work underwent a decisive inflexion: he never stopped depicting the animal kingdom, and particularly birds, which made him a success (Ph. Loisel, Simon Bussy, 1870-1954, l'esprit du trait, du zoo à la gentry, cat. exp., Paris, 1996, p.82). A friend of Gide and correspondent of Matisse and Paul Valéry, he received a positive critical reception from his contemporaries, and Apollinaire declared on 21 February 1913 in L'intransigeant: ‘Bussy's pastels are delicate images, as precious as Persian miniatures’. Bussy was in the habit of pushing the completion of his studies very far. The present sheet should probably be understood in this way: the legs and tail of a third woodcock, as well as the pen sketches in the upper left, betray a state of research. However, the perfectly cut-out shapes of the silhouettes and the care taken in depicting the feathers rival his most accomplished works.
