The Eighth Relation, documenting the arrival of the first nuns in New France. This copy closely corresponds to McCoy's fifth variant of the first edition, with ãii cancelled and the text of A-F and a-d reset; Harrisse considered this a second, corrected edition. It documents the 1639 arrival in Canada of the Ursulines, including Marie de l’Incarnation, the community’s spiritual founder, and Madame de la Peltrie, temporal founder, who began the first school in North America devoted to the education of young girls, both Native and French. The Ursuline community was the first female Order of teachers within the Canadian Church. It also describes the Augustinian Hospitaller canonesses who founded the first hospital in North America. The second part gives the detailed report by Father Guillaume Lalemant, Superior of the Huron Missions, of the founding of the city of Sainte-Marie des Hurons in 1639, which was the central residence of the missionaries in the field. The mission was located just south of Georgian Bay on Lake Huron and near modern-day Midland, Ontario. Bell 16; Church 448; Harrisse 75; McCoy 35; Sabin 39956.
