First edition of the Eleventh Jesuit Relation, documenting the celebrations surrounding the founding of Montréal. Montréal began as a community called Ville Marie, led by Charles Lalemant (brother of Jérôme, the author of the Huron mission reports). This Relation reports improved commerce with the Hurons but increased hostility from the Iroquois. Bell 20; Harrisse 80; McCoy 48; Sabin 99750.
Two parts in one, octavo (166 x 108mm). Woodcut printer's device on title (a few light dampmarks). Contemporary vellum (pastedowns a bit torn). Provenance: "du Noviciai" (inscription on title) – Philip Robinson (his sale, Sotheby's, 23 June 1988, lot 282).
