Lot 227 | Relation de ce qui s'est passé en La Nouvelle France en l'Année 1642 & 1643
Estimate value
$ 8 000 – 12 000
First edition of the Twelfth Relation, including a letter in Algonquin with interlinear French translation. Vimont describes the new settlement of Montréal, the wars between the Iroquois and the Huron, and more on Nicollet's westward travels. This particular Relation does not have a second part on the Huron mission because Isaac Jogues had been captured by the Iroquois and his report was lost. Instead, five letters by him are printed here, documenting his time in captivity. The reports end with a declaration disassociating the Jesuits from the commercial interests of the Company of New France. Bell 23 (first issue); Church 464; Harrisse 81; McCoy 51; One Hundred Michigan Rarities 2; Sabin 99751.
Octavo (174 x 109mm). Woodcut printer's device. 19th-century paper boards imitating vellum, title painted in red and blue on the spine (a little faded). Provenance: "Anguetil Duperrois" (inscription on title) – early inscription of a Jesuit house in Paris – Riggs Library, Georgetown College (stamps) – J. Gilmary Shea (bookplate on pastedown).
