Simon Denis was a pupil of Hendrik Joseph Antonissen in his native Antwerp and specialised in landscape painting from an early age. After several stays in southern Italy, Simon Denis settled permanently in Naples in 1804. In 1807, Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples, appointed him first painter of the chamber for views and landscapes, and then, in 1809, professor at the Academy of Naples. It was thanks to his oils on paper that Simon Denis made a name for himself and was able to survive during his early years in Italy. An oil on paper from the same period, depicting a Vineyard in Ischia, from the same collection as the present study, was sold at Christies in Paris on 23 March 2006, lot 313.
