SIMON VOUET, STUDY OF A HALF-LENGTH NUDE WOMAN, HER LEFT ARM RAISED AND HOLDING A TORCH, BLACK CHALK, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
After spending more than ten years in Italy, Simon Vouet returned to France at the request of Cardinal de Richelieu to take up the post of Premier peintre to Louis XIII and revitalise the arts in Paris. He very quickly built up a large studio, and his pupils learned from the master through drawing, ‘which became the preferred means of communication between master and pupil, transmitting the former’s thoughts to the latter’ (B. Brejon de Lavergnée, Simon Vouet ou l’éloquence sensible, exhib. cat., Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 2002-2003, p. 21).
The drawing is related to the etching Eloquence, of which an impression can be found at the British Museum, London (inv. X,6.68), and in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris. The print shows the figure in reverse, fully draped and wearing a helmet. She holds a thunderbolt in her left hand, as in the drawing, and has her right hand resting on an open book supported by a winged putto; a lion lies near her. The print, published by Philippe Huart, was probably executed by an artist in Vouet’s studio, perhaps Pierre Mignard, as suggested by the impression in the Bibliothèque Nationale that bears the annotation: ‘S. Vouet pinxit/ P. Mignard sculpsit’ (J. Thuillier et al., Vouet, exhib. cat., Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1990, pp. 63-64, ill.). Mignard was active in Vouet’s studio in 1632-1634.
