Further details
THÉODULE AUGUSTIN RIBOT, A YOUNG SEATED MAN AND READING, PEN AND BLACK INK, WATERCOLOUR
A realist painter less well known than his contemporary Gustave Courbet but just as evocative in his choice of subjects, Ribot has only recently come under critical scrutiny. Inspired by the paintings of Rembrandt and Juseppe de Ribera, Ribot's work is characterised by a pronounced taste for dark tones, with dramatic chiaroscuro, but without excessive emphasis. Reflecting the artist's modest origins, he took particular care in depicting everyday objects and scenes, which he captured in his family and friends (E. Delapierre, L. Georget, A. Hemery (eds.), Théodule Ribot 1823-1891, une délicieuse obscurité, cat. exp., Paris, 2021, p.29). Having belonged to the famous Marquis de Chennevières, the present sheet shows a young man absorbed in reading a newspaper: this theme of childhood and reading is found in two other drawings by the artist, one in the Morgan Library in New York (Seated Man Reading, inv. 2001.58), the other in the Cleveland Museum of Fine Arts (Four Girls Studying a Drawing, inv. 2010.289), in which the dark washes are also enhanced with watercolour.
