THOMAS HUDSON (1701-1779), PORTRAIT OF AN ELEGANT MAN WITH A THREE-CORNERED HAT UNDER HIS LEFT ARM, THREE-QUARTER-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS

Dressed in a three-piece suit, made up of a brown silk velvet coat with a recurring pattern, together with breeches of the same material and a silver silk waistcoat embroidered with a floral motif, it is clear that the refined sitter was a dedicated follower of fashion, even if his identity unfortunately remains unknown.

Our young dandy follows French fashion, which favoured the use of two different fabrics for the elements of the costume, whereas the English tend to make the whole outfit from a single fabric. To heighten the effect, the sitter has added a tricorn hat held under the arm - they were rarely worn on the head – and an elegantly curled powdered bagwig. The slightly narrower cut of the coat sleeves and the spread of the jacket tails allow us to date this painting to around 1750, a period when Hudson (1701-1779) was the most sought-after portraitist on the London scene.
