Lot 74 | UNSIGNIERTE CABRETTE, MÖGLW. HISTORISCHE WINDKAPSELSCHALMEI 16. JH.
Estimate value
€ 300 – 600
UNSIGNED CABRETTE, POTENTIALLY HISTORICAL WINDCAP SHAWM 16TH CENTURY
There are different opinions about this woodwind instrument. Rainer Weber, who restored the instrument in 2006 (report available), describes this instrument as a wind-capsule shawm from the 16th century. He also re-manufactured the lost wind capsule with sleeve at this time.
An appraisal by Martin Wenner in 2022 comes to the conclusion that it is rather the chanter of a bagpipe, a so-called "cabrette" from the early 19th century. His view, however, does not literally contradict the designation by R. Weber.
Even Wenner states, that the oxidation (hoary yellow discolouration) of the boxwood suggests that the instrument is more than 200 years old. Furthermore, the cracking on the surface is evidence of use by direct playing with reeds at the mouth or in a wind capsule. This allows the humidity to get directly into the interior of the instrument, which darkens the wood and causes stress cracks on the surface (old polish without UV fluorescence).
The instrument is in playable condition and is rated at a1≈430Hz.
Dimensions: Total length: 62.5cm, length without wind capsule: 53.5cm, weight: approx. 210g.
