Anna Henrietta Wolterbeek (1834 - 1905)
Anna Henrietta Wolterbeek
Anna Henrietta Wolterbeek was a Dutch painter. Wolterbeek probably received her first painting lessons from the landscape painter Pierre Louis Dubourcq. Dubourcq was a member of the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam. The academy did not admit women as pupils or members, they could only become honorary members. Mienette Storm-van der Chijs, champion of education for girls, wrote a letter to the board in 1864 requesting that the academy be opened to women. The board postponed the decision on admitting female students due to an upcoming reorganization. In 1865 the board admitted Wolterbeek and Countess Mathilde von Stoffregen-von Zeppelin as the first women to become full members of the academy. She is considered a student of Barend Wijnveld. Wolterbeek mainly painted (tropical) flower still lifes and landscapes. In 1872 Wolterbeek was co-founder of the Algemeene Nederlandsche Vrouwenvereeniging 'Tesselschade', of which she was chairman for some time. She also gave painting lessons in her studio.
