Hermann Winterhalter
Hermann Fidel Winterhalter was a nineteenth-century German painter. He is known as a painter, the younger brother of the famous portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter.
Hermann Winterhalter worked in Germany and France throughout his career. The Winterhalter brothers were always closely associated with each other, their paintings and names even often confused. There was no professional competition between the brothers, with Hermann being very supportive of his brother's international success. He took over his Paris studio, while Franz traveled throughout Europe and created portraits of members of royal and aristocratic families. In the 1850s, Hermann became more independent and painted portraits independently of his brother.
