This jewel-bright equestrian portrait of King Charles IX (1550-1574) takes as the model for the king's head a drawing by François Clouet (c.1510-1572), now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (RESERVE BOITE FOL-NA-22), executed in 1572 when the young king was twenty-two. There is also a drawing in black stone and red chalk by François Clouet, at the Musée Condé in Chantilly (inv. PD 363; A. Zvereva, ‘Les Valois à cheval’ in A cheval. Le portrait équestre dans la France de la Renaissance, exhib. cat. Ecouen, musée national de la Renaissace, 2024, fig.6, ill.)
Another version of the composition, dating to circa 1575, is held in the National Museum in Stockholm (NMB 1668; Ibid., fig. 8, ill.). It appears to be related to a suite of equestrian portraits of the kings of France, notably Henry II (1519-1559), Henry III (1551-1589) and Henry IV (1553-1610) (inv. nos. PE 281, PE283 and PE 286), now in the musée Condé in Chantilly. The present work, as well as the drawings in Chantilly, take up a theme more widely disseminated through engravings. The kings are not shown in armour, but in large, sumptuously embroidered parade dress, with equally richly adorned mounts who wear a fleur-de-lis saddle cloth, as they would have been on official occasions.
The third son of Henry II and his wife Catherine de Médicis (1519-1589), Charles IX became King of France aged just ten following the premature death of his brother, François II (1544-1560). During his minority, his mother governed his fragile kingdom, which was divided between Catholics and Protestants. Declared of age in 1563, he embarked on a grand tour of France organised by Catherine de Médicis with the aim of showing off the king to his subjects and pacifying religious unrest. However, this project did not work and the Wars of Religion resumed, culminating in the St Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572.

After opening it, select the desired auction from the list, enter and view the current status of the interested lot.
The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
