Précieux exemplaire de tête, avec le supplément, dans une belle reliure “orphique” de Paul Bonet. C'est probablement en voyant certains bois animaliers de Picasso, réalisés en 1906, que Guillaume Apollinaire a l'idée de réaliser un bestiaire. Il se tourne vers son ami Raoul Dufy, qui réalise des illustrations en noir et blanc aux contrastes puissants. Deux de ces illustrations et les poèmes qui leur sont associés - “Le Condor” et “Le Morpion” -, jugés trop "libres", ne seront pas publiés à la sortie du livre. Vingt ans plus tard sera édité un supplément, destiné à être joint aux précieux exemplaires de tête, avec des épreuves de ces bois refusés, amenant le total à 32 grands bois originaux de Dufy. Le présent exemplaire est enfin revêtu d’une superbe reliure “orphique” de Paul Bonet, aux plat mosaïqués d’une lyre d’où semblent s’échapper des volutes de filets dorés, figurant les sons et les notes produits par l’instrument. The Artist and the Book 1860-1960 : cat. 91, p. 69-71.

Grand in-4 (330 x 254 mm). Édition originale. Tirage limité à 120 exemplaires, celui-ci l’un des 29 de tête sur Japon Impérial, n°17, signé par Apollinaire et Dufy à la justification. 30 grands bois de Raoul Dufy (4 hors-texte et 26 accompagnés d’un poème), le premier portant son monogramme, 4 vignettes (page de titre, vignette et cul-de-lampe en fin d'ouvrage ainsi qu'un bandeau sur le dernier feuillet), 5 lettrines dont une répétée. L’exemplaire est enrichi du Supplément publié en 1931, comprenant un papillon-titre, une page de titre, 2 bois non retenus avec leur texte respectif (“Le Condor” et “Le Morpion”), ainsi qu’un feuillet de justification, indiquant un tirage à 29 exemplaires sur Japon impérial, celui-ci le n°17, signé par l’artiste et monogrammé par l’imprimeur. Reliure signée de Paul Bonet, datée 1962 (Carnets, n°1354) : maroquin vert, plats mosaïqués d’une lyre de box blanc, d’où s’échappent des volutes de filets dorés sur toute la surface des plats, dos lisse, lettre dorée, doublures et gardes de box vert, couverture de parchemin conservée, tranches dorées sur témoins, chemise et étui assortis (dos de l'étui insolé).
