Eisen.. invenit et fecit. 1778.' (en bas à gauche)graphite, aquarelle et gouache16 x 11,3 cm (6 1⁄4 x 4 3⁄8 in.) Post lot text CHARLES-DOMINIQUE-JOSEPH EISEN, FOUR STUDIES ABOUT THE ÉTAT DES TROUPES ET DES ÉTATS MAJORS DES PLACES, TWO OF THEM SIGNED AND DATEDAn enthusiast draftsman of the illustrative vignette in which, according to the Goncourt, 'he conveys in small print the charm of his time' (L.-A. Prat, Le Dessin français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 2017, p. 409), Charles Eisen made numerous preparatory drawings for military-themed engravings. These four drawings serve as studies for the frontpiece of the Etat des troupes et des Etats-Majors des Places. The two vignettes, dated 1760 and 1766, feature the arms of France, and those of the years 1777 and 1778 showcase the arms of Alexandre Marie Eléonor de Saint-Mauris-Montbarrey (1732-1795), Secretary of State for War under Louis XVI. During the 18th century, Jean-Laurent Legeay and Alexandre Vigneux also illustrated certain years of military memorabilia in a similar style.
