FERDINAND VICTOR EUGÈNE DELACROIX, THE ANNUNCIATION, GRAPHITE, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH
Framed like a theatre set, the present drawing brings to mind the works of countless masters from the past. Drawn around 1840, the composition is a preparatory work for a painting in the collection of Musée Delacroix, Paris (fig. 1; inv. MD 1988-8; see L. Johnson, The Paintings of Eugène Delacroix. A Critical Catalogue, Oxford, 1981, III, no. 425, IV, pl. 236; and Eugène Delacroix, exhib. cat., Zurich, Kunsthaus, and Frankfurt, Städtische Galerie im Städelschen Kuntsintitut, 1987-1988, no. 53, ill. p. 166). The painting was made to decorate a chapel dedicated to the Virgin in the church Saint-Denys-du-Saint-Sacrement in the Rue de Turenne in Paris. Talking about the finished painting, Charles Baudelaire said in one of a series of articles in the newspaper L’Opinion nationale (2 September and 14 and 22 November 1863): ‘I saw a little Annunciation by Delacroix, in which the angel visiting Mary was not alone but ceremoniously accompanied by two other angels, and the effect of this heavenly court was both powerful and charming’.
