Further details
FERDINAND-VICTOR-EUGÈNE DELACROIX, ON THE MOROCCAN COAST, WATERCOLOR
Delacroix accompanied the Comte de Morlay on his mission to Morocco in early 1832. They embarked in Toulon on 11 January aboard the frigate La Perle. After sailing along the coasts of Minorca, Majorca and south-eastern Spain, they passed Salobrena before making a refuelling stop at Algesiras. It was at this point, skirting the sides of Gibraltar, that Delacroix drew another watercolour view, very similar to the present one and of the same dimensions, annotated ‘Côte d'Afrique/ detroit de Gibraltar (Musée du Louvre, inv. RF4510 ; M. Sérullaz, et al., Dessins d’Eugène Delacroix. Inventaire général des dessins. Ecole française, Paris, 1984, II, n° 1626).
This watercolour, like the one in the Louvre, is a rare example of the first drawings in Mediterranean light that Delacroix produced, probably at sea, just before the expedition arrived in Tangiers on 24 January 1832.
