Précieux exemplaire de tête, tel que paru, avec deux suites des eaux-fortes avec remarques, et un dessin original de Matisse, préparatoire à l’une des planches. Il s’agit du premier livre entièrement illustré par Matisse : l’artiste n’avait auparavant produit que quelques planches, soit pour des monographies, soit pour un ouvrage collectif. C’est à la demande de l’éditeur Albert Skira que Matisse accepta de se confronter à l’illustration d’un livre. Alors âgé de 61 ans, il y déploya librement son art, poursuivant ses propres recherches formelles (nymphes, faunes, la mer…) au gré des pages, sans jamais les assujettir au texte. Il s’efforça de créer « un trait régulier, très mince », sans ombre, qui laisse « la feuille imprimée presqu’aussi blanche qu’avant l’impression ». Le dessin original, un nu féminin, est une esquisse préparatoire à la planche de la page 147. On retrouve également la même composition dans les remarques de la planche de la page 35. In-4 (330 x 250 mm), en feuilles, tel que paru. Tirage limité à 145 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci l’un des 5 de tête sur Japon impérial comprenant deux suites avec remarques et un dessin original, n°2, signé par Matisse à la justification. 29 eaux-fortes originales de Henri Matisse (dont 23 hors texte et 6 vignettes). Comme annoncé à la justification, l’exemplaire comprend également deux suites des 29 eaux-fortes de Matisse, tirées avec remarques sur Japon nacré et sur Chine, ainsi qu’un dessin original signé, à la mine de plomb, préparatoire à l’une des eaux-fortes. Le dessin, réalisé sur un feuillet de papier Ingres d’Arches, présente le cachet à sec “Mallarmé-Matisse” (318 x 236 mm, signé en bas à droite). Sous couverture rempliée avec titre imprimé en noir. Chemise, étui et emboîtage de demi-maroquin fauve de Jean-Luc Honegger.

Georges Matisse a confirmé l'authenticité du dessin.

An especially desirable copy of the first book entirely illustrated by Matisse : one of first 5 on Imperial Japan paper (no.2) comprising two suites of the etchings with remarques on mother-of-pearl Japan and China paper, and an original drawing signed by Matisse, preparatory for one of the plates.
