Précieux exemplaire aux armes de la marquise de Pompadour de cet ouvrage fondateur de la science politique moderne, relié avec la Défense en édition originale. Femme d'esprit sensible aux idées nouvelles, Madame de Pompadour choisit de représenter De l’esprit des loix parmi les volumes visibles sur son portrait au pastel par La Tour, avec la Henriade de Voltaire et le tome IV de l'Encyclopédie – un choix de décor éminemment réfléchi par celle qui s'affichait en "amie de l'Etat" et qui fut hautement impliquée dans la politique intérieure et extérieure du pays. Madame de Pompadour possédait un second exemplaire de l'ouvrage (2 vol. in-4, probablement de l'édition imprimée à Paris par Prault car la description indique le nom "Barilot" avec un seul "r") ainsi qu'un autre exemplaire de la Défense (voir n°220 et n°222 de son catalogue).

La marquise elle-même serait intervenue pour censurer l'une des réfutations du livre par Dupin, se plaçant en protectrice du philosophe : Montesquieu, sensible à la critique, "demanda que cette réfutation fût supprimée, employant l'intervention toute-puissante de Mme de Pompadour, pour obtenir, de M. Dupin, ce sacrifice" (Bulletin du bibliophile, mai 1859, pp. 319-320), ce qui entraîna la destruction quasi-intégrale du tirage des Observations sur un livre intitulé l'Esprit des loix, sauf pour une trentaine d'exemplaires qui avaient déjà été dispersés. Soutien indéfectible de Voltaire, la marquise défendra aussi la publication des premiers volumes de l'Encyclopédie lorsqu'ils seront condamnés par le Parlement de Paris.

Cette édition, publiée un an après l'originale, est une réimpression de l'édition in-12 donnée en 1748 par Barrillot à Genève. Il s'agit de l'édition originale pour la Défense de l'Esprit des loix. Tchemerzine, pp. 930-931 ; En Français dans le texte, n°138, "Distinguant, selon les degrés de liberté qu'ils comportent, trois formes de gouvernement, la république (démocratie et aristocratie), la monarchie et le despotisme, Montesquieu fonde la science politique moderne en analysant la forme de chaque gouvernement pour découvrir les lois propres, c'est-à-dire fondamentales, à chacun, et en déduire les lois positives que chacun de ces gouvernements doit adopter") ; PMM, n° 197 ("In many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century. [...] his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated.").

4 vol. in-12 (164 x 92 mm). Reliure de l'époque : veau blond aux armes de la marquise de Pompadour (OHR, planche n° 2399, fer 5 au format 50x40mm), triple encadrement de filets dorés et fleurons en écoinçons, dos à nerfs orné de petits fers floraux, pièces de titre en maroquin rouge et de tomaison en maroquin olive, tranches rouges, filets sur les coupes.

Precious copy bearing the arms of Madame de Pompadour, mistress of king Louis XV and major patron of the philosophers of the Enlightenment who actively took part in domestic and foreign politics. She actually chose to be portrayed next to a copy of this book in her portrait by Latour and probably took part in the destruction of Dupin's refutation of the book.
