The young Neruda in Paris, Rangoon, Colombo and Tokyo. In the earliest letter Neruda writes to Guillermo de Torre in December 1926 on literary subjects, with news of his impending departure to Europe and plans to publish his poetry in Spain or France: 'I am tired of South American publishers'. To Inés Hinojosa Silva Neruda writes from the café du Dôme, Paris, on 7 August 1927 (in a joint letter with her brother Álvaro during a stop in Paris en route to take up his consular position in Rangoon) to complain of not hearing from her, and that 'there is nothing happening here'; from Rangoon itself on 28 October, still with Álvaro, he writes happily of their lazy existence, 'We are living in the earthly paradise, which is to say in the YMCA ... We are both eating a lot of horrible English food'; from Colombo on 23 November 1929 the mood has changed, and he complains that 'I have been in Colombo for a year now with hopes of leaving that are endlessly extended. I have no desire to return to Chile. I would rather stay in Europe / Since Álvaro left I have lived quite alone, a servant, a dog and a kitten ...'; in an undated card from Tokyo he writes (on the verso of a menu from the Cafe Kuroneko) with a flood of impressions of the city. Two of the letters from this period (to Georges Sauré and Sarah Hubner) are letters of introduction for Sylvia Thayer (wife of Álvaro Hinojosa), who is also the recipient of two brief notes. In the letters from the 1950s, after his return to Chile, Neruda writes to 'Raul' on 10 October 1954, apparently about proposed alterations to a house: 'I want plenty of light coming in to my study'; and in July 1955 he writes Joaquín Edwards Bello to remind him 'that you promised me a part of your memoirs for the magazine that we plan to publish'.

Letters from the earlier period of Neruda's life, particularly during his years in the Chilean consular service in the 1920s and 1930s, are rare at auction.
