Post lot text VICTOR-MARIE HUGO, A FANTASTIC CASTLE, PEN AND BROWN INK, SIGNED AND DATEDIn 1840, the year Victor Hugo created this fantastic castle, he travelled throughout the Rhine Valley with the actress Juliette Drouet. His landscapes alternate between dream-like reveries and topographical surveys. During this period, the use of wash in his drawings is still rare, as our drawing attests. From this journey will arise, Le Rhin : un guide de voyage published in 1842. A drawing of a very similar format and technique dated April 1st, 1839, entitled The Manor House with a Gothic Tower in an Arid Landscape, is kept at the Maison Victor Hugo in Paris (inv. 954; G. Audinet, Victor Hugo. Dessins. Collection des Maisons de Victor Hugo. Paris/Guernesey, Paris, 2021, no. 61).We thank Pierre Georgel for confirming the attribution. The drawing will be included in the catalogue raisonné of the artist's drawings currently in preparation.
