Further details
‘What interests me the most in my work is its intrinsic quality: colour and matter. Breton was not interested in that; he did not have a retinal approach; he only saw the story. What is important are the composition, and the painting’s materiality; that is what I studied at the Musée de Picardie in the presence of Velasquez. I see myself as being very independent. I have never approved of cubism. It never moved me. I enjoy painting female beauty. All my life I have been seeking for the most beautiful things in nature in view of expressing them in my paintings. I have found nothing more beautiful than a naked young girl. For men who are men, it is a show that stirs one’s emotions. God reveals himself through a woman's sex. I have not really been interested in painting men in my works. You see, men are not funny'.
