Bill “Bojangles” ROBINSON (1878-1949), Cabell “Cab” CALLOWAY (1907-1994), and Lena HORNE (1917-2010).

A collection of publicity photographs featuring legendary performers and entertainers Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Cab Calloway and Lena Horne, 1930s-1950s, who starred together in the 1943 20th Century Fox musical Stormy Weather, comprising:

An oversized original black and white photograph of the great tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in hit musical The Hot Mikado at the Broadhurst Theatre, New York, 1939, signed and inscribed in black ink by Robinson ‘To Harry Brown, One of the finest managers I have had the pleasure to work for, Sincere good wishes, Bill Robinson, 1940’, vintage platinum print, 354 x 279 mm; together with five vintage press photographs of Robinson variously posing with his tap shoes, his foot roller, in slippers and long johns, and with business partner Anthony Morrison at their co-owned Harlem club Mimo, the images taken on 7 November 1940 by staff photographer Alan Fisher for the short-lived New York newspaper PM, vintage gelatin silver press prints, with stamped photographer’s credit, date stamps and original press captions verso, each approx. 253 x 203 mm;

[With:] an early photo postcard of flamboyant bandleader Cab Calloway, 1931, at the time of his big career break aged just 24, when his band became the joint house band at the Cotton Club alongside Duke Ellington’s Orchestra and he released his big hit Minnie the Moocher, signed in black ink ‘Sincerely, Cab. Calloway’, sepia-toned gelatin silver print, the postcard used and frank-marked 25 June 1931, New York, 133 x 87 mm; together with a programme for the Cotton Club, World’s Fair Edition, New York, 1939, signed in red pencil by Calloway at his portrait on the star billing page shared with Bill Robinson, 306 x 231 mm; a candid black and white stage photograph of Calloway, c.1946, signed in blue ballpoint pen ‘Hi di Hi, Cab Calloway’, vintage gelatin silver print, from the collection of Cleveland photographer and autograph collection Nat Singerman, 253 x 202 mm; and a copy of his autobiography Of Minnie the Moocher & Me, co-written with Bryant Rollins, New York: 1976, first edition, signed by Calloway on the half-title ‘Hi d Hi, Cab Calloway’.

[And:] two candid black and white stage photographs of legendary vocalist Lena Horne and jazz pianist Billy Taylor, c.1950, the images by noted African-American photographer Charles (Chuck) Stewart, gelatin silver prints, each with stamped photographer’s credit verso, each approx. 250 x 199 mm.
