Complete set of Captain Cook’s Southern Hemisphere, South Pole, and Pacific Ocean voyages, all first editions except vol. II of the First Voyage which is the second edition. Observing the transit of Venus while potentially locating “the southern continent,” circumnavigating the globe as far south as possible, and seeking out the Northwest Passage were the missions Captain James Cook endeavored to fulfil on his three famed journeys to the Pacific. Charting approximately 5,000 miles of coastline during his first voyage, including his unprecedented exploration of the newly-named Society Island, Cook won acclaim for his work and the opportunities to venture twice more to the opposite side of the globe. Combined with his later two voyages, “Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done” (Hill 358). His third voyage, however, would prove to be his last. Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay after he attempted to kidnap the Hawaiian king, Kalaniʻōpuʻu. Cadell, 1773. 3 vols., quarto (275 x 215mm), and folio (455 x 280mm). 51 engraved plates bound in the atlas, some folding, and some with deckled edges. Early issue without the chart of the Strait of Magellan and the directions to the binder (the first contents leaf A4 in vol. I misbound between B1-2, contents leaves in vol. II misbound between a4 and B1).
[SECOND VOYAGE]: COOK, Captain James. A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure. London: for W. Strahan and T. Cadell 1777. 2 vols., quarto (275 x 215mm), and folio (485 x 320mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait, folding table, and 63 engraved plates bound in the atlas, some folded, some with deckled edges (A4 of vol. II misbound between A1-2).
[THIRD VOYAGE]: COOK, Captain James and James KING (c.1750-1784). A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean... for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. To determine... the Practicability of a Northern Passage to Europe. London: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol and T. Cadell 1784. 3 vols., quarto (275 x 215mm), and folio (523 x 378mm). 24 engraved plates in the text volumes and 63 engraved plates in the atlas, complete without the 'Death of Cook' plate sometimes found bound into some copies.
Together 11 volumes, quarto and folio. (A very few text leaves and some plates with neatly repaired tears, very occasional light spots or stains, partly washed and pressed). Uniformly bound in richly gilt red morocco by Aquarius.
