A GEORGE II SILVER BASKET

MARK OF PHILLIPS GARDEN, LONDON, 1754

Of scallop shell form, on three cast dolphin feet and with stylised mermaid herm handle terminating in bifurcated tails, with shells, seaweed and coral, the waved rim pierced with foliate scrolls and with applied cast border chased with shells on a sea foam ground, engraved on handle with crest and motto, marked underneath and with scratch weight 58=18 twice

13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide

57 oz. 19 dwt. (1,803 gr.)

The crest is that of Browne, for Thomas Browne, formerly Trollope (d.1770), who inherited the Browne estates of Gretford and Tolethorpe on the death of his unmarried uncle Francis Browne (1685-1751).
