A GEORGE III CREAM, BLUE, POLYCHROME-PAINTED, AND PARCEL-GILT COMMODE

ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE BROOKSHAW, CIRCA 1780

The copper top painted with leaves and flowers, beads and scrolls on an ivory ground all within a band of ribbon-tied flowers and foliage, centered by a fan patera, the central gilt-moulded panel flanked by cupboards and punctuated by vases of roses and morning glories with upper and lower bands of husks and paterae, possibly originally conceived with further painted medallions to the doors, carved giltwood guilloche molding on turned, tapered, reeded and leaf-carved feet, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

37 ½ in. (95.2 cm.) high, 63 ½ in. (161.3 cm.) wide, 24 in. (61 cm.) deep





Provenance

Probably commissioned by Hugh Percy (1714-1786), 1st Duke of Northumberland, for Northumberland House, The Strand, London.

By descent to Algernon Percy, son of Hugh Percy, Bishop of Carlisle, who married Emily Heber, daughter of Bishop Heber, in 1839.

Sold by direction of Algernon Heber-Percy Esq., removed from Hodnet Hall, Shropshire; Christie's, London, 22 November 1967, lot 116.

Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, London, 7 November 1997, lot 58.

Acquired by Ann and Gordon Getty from the above.
