Literature
This rare and unusually large figure depicts Bodhisattva Manjusri seated on a striding lion and stylistically can be dated to the Five Dynasty or Song period. Manjusri is the embodiment of wisdom and is often depicted holding a sword, which symbolises the destruction of ignorance, but in this period sometimes the sword is substituted by a ruyi. Here the sword/ruyi is cast separately and now lost. Compare a small bronze example of Manjusri (fig. 1) in the Cleveland Museum of Art dated to the Five Dynasty. There is also a large stucco figure of Manjusri (fig. 2) in the Dafoguangsi temple in Wutaishan.
