Lot 5434 | A Luftwaffe Fallschirmjaeger Helmet Cover, 1st Pattern
A Luftwaffe Fallschirmjaeger Helmet Cover, 1st Pattern
Textbook example constructed of greenish-grey cotton twill fabric. The top panel is attached to side panels which is joined to the rear by straight machine stitching with all seams finished on the inside. Internal threads are dark grey while outer external threads are a lighter shade. A 3.2 cm brown herringbone tape is attached around the cover with vertical stitching spaced 5.5cm apart. The tape is joined at the rear. This was for insertion of vegetation for additional camouflage. A 1.5 cm tape is positioned cross wise at the top of the cover. Inside on the covers edge is more 1.5 cm tape used to reinforce the 6 steel clips used to secure the cover to the helmet. Four hooks remain intact with two tips having broken off. There are faint markings in black ink to the left inner panel. Also initials “SA” seem to be located on the top of the cover. Lots of overall wear but no fabric is missing. There are no repairs. The cover has rust colored mottling. Cover fits on a size 68 helmet.
This exact cover appears in the book The History of German Steel Helmets 1916-1945 by Ludwig Baer. This is one of only a handful known to exist.
