ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS ROBERTS, CIRCA 1730

Each with a rectangular upholstered back and seat covered in 18th century crimson silk velvet re-applied on an ivory silk satin ground, on lion's mask monopodia ending in paw feet, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

41 3/4 in. (106 cm.) high, 26 1/2 in. (67 cm.) wide, 28 in. (71 cm.) deep





Provenance

Almost certainly commissioned by George Lee, 2nd Earl of Lichfield (1690-1743) for Ditchley Park, Oxfordshire.

His daughter and co-heiress Lady Charlotte Lee (1724-1794), who married the 11th Viscount Dillon (1705-1787) in 1744.

Thence by descent to Harold Arthur, 17th Viscount Dillon, Sold by His Executors; Sotheby’s, London, 26 May 1933, lot 145.

Acquired by Nancy and Ronald Tree coinciding with their purchase of Ditchley Park in 1933.

Thence by descent to Michael and Lady Anne Tree, née Cavendish, until sold, Property of the Lady Anne Tree, removed from Mereworth Castle, Kent; Christie's, London, 23 May 1968, lot 114.

With Partridge, London.

The Property of a Nobleman; Christie's, London, 27 June 1985, lot 184.

Acquired by Ann and Gordon Getty from the above.
