A PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER CONDIMENT URNS

MARK OF LOUISA COURTAULD AND GEORGE COWLES, LONDON, 1771

Each of Lebes Gamikos form, on spreading circular foot with gadrooned border, engraved with Greek key and sloping anthemion borders, framing on one a scene of a warrior holding a shield engraved with a crest, standing in front of a tent and a Briton offering a helmet to another warrior, his shield engraved with a coat-of-arms, the other engraved with a standing warrior holding his shield, engraved with the same crest, and on the other side with a warrior holding a sword above a vanquished foe and holding a banner engraved with the same coat-of-arms, with flying loop handles, the removable covers with gadrooned borders and engraved with Greek-key bands and with flute-engraved flame finials, with two pierced ladles suspended from the handles, with feather-edged stems engraved with the same crest, the smaller associated example with plain piercing, the larger pierced with quatrefoils and scrolls, marked on bases, one with maker's mark only, on covers and ladles, the smaller ladle with maker's mark of Thomas Evans

7 in. (18 cm.) high, the ladles 5 1/2 in. (14 cm.) and 5 in. (12.6 cm.) long

21 oz. 13 dwt. (674 gr.)

The arms are those of Birch, for Charles Birch (d. 1780) of Woodford, Essex, and London, and his wife, Sarah Creed, daughter of Sir James Creed, whom he married in 1765.
