With the defeat at Stalingrad an increasing number of German POW's had lost their belief in Germany's victory and became more and more open to anti-fascists and even communist ideas. And on July 12, 1943 the NKFD was founded by German communists in Soviet exile in Krasnogorsk, the home of the Antifascist Central School in which foreigners could study Communism. Shortly after that the BDO (League of German Officers) joined the NKFD. The BDO was led by General Walther von Seydlitz-Kurzbach who had the plan to raise a corps of 40.000 German soldiers in Russian captivity to fight Nazi-Germany alongside the Soviet army but his plans of the so-called "Seydlitz Army" were denied. But due to Seydlitz' and the BDO's propaganda appeals to Wehrmacht officers and soldiers to surrender to the Soviet Army eleven of the 22 German Generals of the army in Stalingrad joined the BDO, amongst them the most prominent member Generalfeldmarschall Friedrich Paulus. Both NKFD and BDO were dissolved on November 2, 1945, the NKFD members were sent into the Soviet occupation zone at the end of the war, and the BDO members were released from the POW camps and sent to East Germany over the years to help building the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic.
