Lot 46 | A VICTORIAN SILVER TREASURY INKSTAND
Oblong on four pad feet, the plain body with reeded moulded borders and applied with two scroll side handles, the cover with central hinge, one side a long compartment for pens, the other two inkwells with detachable clear glass liners and a compartment for nibs and stamps, engraved on the cover with coat-of-arms and crest and inside the cover with inscription, fully marked and stamped underneath R.& S. GARRARD LONDON
101/2 in. (26.7 cm.) wide
78 oz. 16 dwt. (2,452 gr.)
The arms are those of Gladstone quartering Glynne for William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), Liberal Statesman and four term Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The inscription inside the cover reads:

Which translated reads: 'To the Right Honourable William E. Gladstone on his 50thwedding anniversary (literally: on happily concluding the tenth lustrum from his wedding), 25 July 1889, from I. M. Carmichael [etc.] having been admitted to his more secret deliberations consider themselves especially fortunate that public affairs should so greatly interest such a leader, teacher, patron and friend’.
