William Bligh, 1792
BLIGH, William (1754-1817) and James BURNEY (1750-1821). A Voyage to the South Sea, Undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the Purpose of Conveying the Bread-Fruit Tree to the West Indies, in his Majesty's Ship The Bounty. London: for George Nicol, 1792.
First edition of the official account of the Bounty expedition in a contemporary binding. This "extremely important book" offers "a slightly revised version of the text of Bligh's narrative of the mutiny, previously published at London in 1790...this account was based on Bligh's journal, but was written, edited, and seen through the press by James Burney, under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks" (Hill). The facts of the events on the Bounty and their aftermath continued to evolve over the ensuing years, with the hunt for the mutineers still ongoing and Fletcher Christian's whereabouts unknown when this report was published. Hill 135; Ferguson 125.
Quarto (294 x 235mm). Frontispiece portrait of Bligh, 2 single-page plates and 4 folding plans and maps (minor offsetting from plates, a few spots). Contemporary calf (rebacked, corners showing). Provenance: Charles S. Smith, Sherwood House (bookplate).
