First edition of the hilarious and multi-award winning play set in a grammar school in the north of England. Signed by the author on the title page, with self-portraits on the title page and final page of text, and with 291 words of annotations about the history of the play’s production and reflections on its afterlife. Bennett also includes a range of autobiographical details, from the positioning of photographs in his grandmother’s house to a characteristic remark about his youthful devoutness: ‘I was quite religious as a boy and always felt vicars were embarrassed by my piety. They wanted to rescue souls not be given them on a plate.’
