Further details

ALEXIS JOSEPH PÉRIGNON, PORTRAIT OF MARIE-LOUISE ARRIGHI DE CASANOVA, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH, SIGNED AND DATED, OIL ON CANVAS

This elegant portrait testifies to ability of Alexis Joseph Pérignon (1806-1882) to sensitively capture the personality of his models and the delicate details of their clothing. These qualities earned him great success with the beau monde of the Restoration. At the 1844 Salon, he won a gold medal, after which he received several commissions, including that of Madame Marie-Louise Thayer (1812-1866).

Daughter of Jean-Thomas Arrighi de Casanova, Duke of Padua (1778-1853) and his wife Anne Rose Zoé de Montesquiou Fezensac (1792-1817), Marie-Louise was born in 1812. Her father, a cousin by marriage to Napoleon I (1769-1829), was a division general in the army before resigning his command during the Second Restoration. The elections to the Legislative Assembly on 13 May 1849 opened the doors of the first parliament of the Second Republic to him, and he was elected deputy for Corsica.

In 1834, Marie-Louise married Edouard-James Thayer (1802-1859), son of the American weapons manufacturer James William Thayer (1763-1835) who came to Paris during the Revolution. It is to James that we owe the Passage des Panoramas, which he had built around the Hôtel de Montmorency. Edouard-James was an active member of the Société de la Morale Chrétienne and fought for the abolition of the slave trade. Although he was not elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848, he remained involved in Bonapartist politics and in December of that year replaced Étienne Arago (1802-1892) as Director General of the Post Office. For her part, Marie-Louise was for a time lady-in-waiting to Marie-Clotilde (1843-1911), Princess Napoleon, wife of Prince Napoleon-Jérôme Bonaparte (1822-1891).

This pyramidal structure of the present portrait is typical of Pérignon's classicism. Turning slightly to the left, the model wears a white taffeta dress with a graceful lace collar. The delicacy of the costume and the radiance of her skin are highlighted by the bright colours of her scarf, evoking the fashion for Indian fabrics, and the rose wallpaper with arabesque designs in garnet velvet.
