Henry Fielding, 1752

FIELDING, Henry (1707-1754). Amelia. London: A. Millar, 1752.

First edition of Fielding's last novel, with advertisement leaf. Although there were two impressions of the edition a month apart, there are no recorded distinguishing characteristics between them. Fielding began writing the novel soon after he began his magistracy, and it took a markedly different approach to his comic works Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. He declared in the dedication that this work was “sincerely designed to promote the Cause of Virtue, and to expose some of the most glaring Evils, as well public as private, which at present infest the Country.” It may be seen as the first novel of social protest and reform in English, though it is also the sentimental story of its long-suffering heroine’s marriage. Cross III, p. 321, Rothschild 853.

Four volumes, 12mo (165 x 92mm). Advert leaf at rear of vol. 2 (lacking blank at end of vol. 1). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco gilt spine labels (very nearly uniform, spines darkened with little flaking to leather and chipping at ends, some wear to joints and tips). Provenance: Sir Thomas Woollaston White, 1st Baronet of Tuxford and Wallingwells, 1767-1817 (armorial bookplate).
