AMICO, Bernardino (1576-1920) - Jacques CALLOT (1592-1635) - Trattato delle piante & immagini de sacri edifizi di Terra Santa disegnate in Jerusaleme. Florence: Pietro Cecconcelli, 1620 [1619 al colophon].

Second edition of this fascinating work on the Holy Land by the Franciscan father Bernardino Amico from Gallipoli who spent five years (1593-1597) drawing maps, palaces and sections of buildings in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Cairo. The first edition dates back to 1610, but this second pubblication includes the engravings by Jacques Callot. Amico's designs were the first to provide an accurate depiction of the Holy Sepulcher and laid the foundation for modern archaeological research at historic sites in the Holy Land.

Folio (266 x 185mm). Engraved title with the Medici coat of arms and 34 double-page plates engraved by Jacques Callot, containing 47 sections of buildings, urban views and a plan of Jerusalem, woodcut initials and headpieces, large printer's device at the end (reinforced title, leaves mounted on guards, final leaves with some marginal restoration, light spotting and staining). Contemporary vellum, gilt title on spine (slight staining).
