MUNDINUS (c.1270-1326). Anatomia. Edited by Martinus Polichius de Mellerstadt. Leipzig: Martin Landsberg, [c.1493].

First illustrated edition of a work that re-introduced the method of anatomical dissection. With Anatomia, Mundinus set a new standard for dissection that defined anatomical knowledge across Europe for the next two centuries. Completed in 1316, Anatomia in manuscript form was widely popular and effective in reintroducing surgery as a vital part of anatomical training and medical knowledge more broadly. From the 1470s onwards, the work proved to be successful among Italian presses, receiving many incunable editions and solidifying its status as an essential contribution to understandings of the human body. But the present edition was the first to combine forces with the nascent field of printed medical illustration—showing a student dissecting a cadaver outdoors with an instructor teaching from his own copy of the Anatomia. Printed in Leipzig, this copy is a witness to the success and demand for Mundinus’s Anatomia beyond his native Italy. H *11633; Bod-inc M-330; Goff M874; Klebs 688.6; ISTC im00874000.
