Four leaves from a Lectionary, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [Low Countries, probably Stavelot, 11th century]

Four handsome leaves from a Carolingian Lectionary likely made in the 11th century for the Benedictine abbey of St Remacle of Stavelot.

Four leaves, each c.297 x 205mm., 33 lines in two columns written in two sizes of a clear Caroline bookhand, rubrics and large initials in red, a few lines of musical notation, the first leaf with the Gospel reading, offertory and secret for the Nativity; the second leaf with text for Christmas Eve; the third with readings for the 2nd week of Lent; the fourth with a reading from John (recovered from a binding and with stains, scuffs, small holes and trimmed at edges, affecting text of one leaf, some text faded). Loosely mounted in a modern quarter-morocco binding gilt.

Provenance:

(1) Recovered from an early printed book from the library of the Benedictine abbey of St Remacle of Stavelot that bore the inscription: 'Liber m[ona]sterij Stabulen[sis]'. The gargantuan Stavelot Bible (British Library, Additional MSS, 28106 and 28107, written c.1093-97), includes a catalogue of the library on f.228v copied in 1105 that mentions a 'Lectionarius in nataliciis sanctorum': the 2015 Bloomsbury catalogue suggested that the present leaves might be from that Lectionary (see also J. Gessler 'Les catalogues des bibliotheques monastiques de Lobbes et de Stavelot', Revue d'Histoire ecclesiastique, 29 [1933], p.95). The books and manuscripts of the Stavelot Library were auctioned in Ghent in 1847, Catalogue d'une belle collection, but by this stage the leaves would already have been part of the binding of the printed book from which they came.

(2) Two leaves were purchased at Bloomsbury, 8 July 2015, lot 15. The other two leaves were purchased privately from Bloomsbury that same year.
