Further details

ANTONIO CAMPI, STUDY OF HEADS IN PROFILE, BLACK CHALK HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON BLUE PAPER

On this sheet, several studies of heads derived from Parmigianino's inventions are brought together. As Popham has already noticed, the three bearded heads in the upper right correspond to those in the background of Parmigianino's etching The Entombment (A.E. Popham, Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino, New Haven, 1971, I, p. 249, under n° 114 ). The figure in the lower left recalls another creation by Parmigianino: the head of Echo known from the chiaroscuro woodcut Narcissus by Antonio da Trento (Bartsch XII.148.13). Finally, the head of the young man in the lower right comes from a figure in Parmigianino's Marriage of the Virgin, a drawing by Chatworth engraved by Jacopo Caraglio (Bartsch XV.66.1). The artist who skilfully copied Parmigianino's inventions on this sheet has been identified as the Lombard artist Antonio Campi, an attribution confirmed by Marco Tanzi and David Ekserdjian, (communications with the current owner). A comparable drawing by Campi is in the Louvre (inv. 7846). An engraving in the British Museum reproduces the present sheet on the verso and was included by Conrad Martin Metz in his book of imitations of ancient and modern masters (Metz, Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings from the Restoration of the Arts in Italy to the Present Time, London, 1798). According to Metz, the original drawing supposedly by Parmigianino - which should be identified with the present sheet - was in the collection of Benjamin West (see provenance).
