Lot 98 | Atomic Energy for Military Purposes
Henry DeWolf SMYTH (1898-1986). Atomic Energy for Military Purposes. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1945.

First trade edition of Smyth's summation of the Manhattan Project, signed by J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leslie Groves, and other key physicists in the development of the atomic bomb. The half-title page bears six signatures: director of the Manhattan Project, Leslie R. GROVES ("L.R. Groves Maj Gen U.S.A."); chairman of Columbia's physics department who played a key role in the technical administration of the Manhattan Project, George B. PEGRAM ("George B. Pegram"); John R. DUNNING ("J.R. Dunning"); Aristid von GROSSE ("A.V. Grosse"); Henry DeWolf SMYTH ("Henry DeWolf Smyth"); and J. Robert OPPENHEIMER ("J. Robert Oppenheimer"). Above the signatures is an inscription in an unknown hand: "October 3, 1945. Presentation of War Department Scroll to Columbia University." The signatures were presumably collected on 3 October or the day after, when the presentation ceremony of the scroll occurred.

Octavo. Original salmon cloth, lettered in burgundy on spine (light rubbing to edges, few spots to top paper edge); dust jacket (toned, some edge-wear, spine panel splitting at lower fold, small chips to ends).

WITH: Other ephemera related to the presentation of the War Department scroll to Columbia University, comprising: a program of the 4 October 1945 ceremony, listing speeches by both Groves as "Officer in Charge, Atomic Bomb Project", and Pegram as Dean and Chairman of the University Committee on War Research; copies of the typed speeches given by Groves and Pegram.
