Further Details
A BRONZE KNEELING SATYR, WITH GILT HAIR AND BOWL, ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO SEGALA, PADUA, CIRCA 1550
Traditionally attributed to Andrea Briosco, also known as 'Riccio' (1470-1532), the original model of a similar kneeling satyr is now attributed to Severo da Ravenna (active c. 1496-c. 1543), who produced this model between 1496 and 1538 when he is known to have signed one cast with his initials. The present cast bears similarities with the one in the Louvre (inv. MR 3275) reproduced in Girardon's gallery (see engraving by N. Chevalier after R. Charpentier, ‘Veüe d’un des Côtez de la Gallerie du Sr. Girardon Sculpteur ordinaire du Roy’, in La Galerie de Girardon, No. 9). Although a great deal is known about this model, its authorship remains difficult to determine with certainty. In European Bronzes from the Quentin Collection at the Frick Collection (New York), Patricia Wengraf attributes it to Francesco Segala (c. 1535-1592) due to its similarities with the physiognomy and modelling of his Hercules (Quentin Collection, cat. 4) and its resemblance to the Perfume Burner (Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, inv. WA 2004.I) attributed to his master, Agostino Zoppo (c. 1520-1572).
