AUVERT, Alexander Ivanovich (d.1865)
Selecta Praxis Medico-Chirurgicae quam Mosquae exercet ... typis et figuris expressa Parisiis moderante Ambr. Tardieu. Paris: Baillière & Bossange; Moscow: Urbain, 1851.
First complete published edition of this extremely scarce work, with the epilogue leaf dated July 1851: an important series of illustrations of pathologies, originally published in 24 parts from 1848 to 1851. ‘Auvert was professor in Moscow. This folio atlas includes 120 folio plates of pathology subjects, drawn by Schtschegoleff in Moscow [and] engraved in Paris by Oudet, printed in color and retouched by hand, with explanatory text in Latin for each plate. The work was edited for production and publication in Paris by August Ambroise Tardieu, the leading forensic medicine specialist, who was also an artist like his father, the cartographer and engraver Ambroise Tardieu (1788-1841)’ (Norman). Garrison-Morton-Norman (online) 7495.

Large folio (552 x 370mm). 120 stipple-engraved plates printed in colours and finished by hand, by Forget, Oudet and Annedouche after Schatschegoleff (without half-title, scattered spotting, stains and soiling to text and plates). Early twentieth-century purple morocco-backed purple cloth boards (spine sunned and slightly rubbed, remains of tape marks to head of spine). Provenance: Royal Society of Medicine (circular library ink stamp [Royal Medical & Chirurgical Society] to title, text and plates).
