Lot 4175 | Important pocket watch with gold case, Pouzait escapement, go…
Important pocket watch with gold case, Pouzait escapement, gold Pouzait balance and seconde morte, Robert & Courvoisier No. 88693, ca. 1790, one of the first watches for the Chinese market!
Ca. Ø56.5mm, ca. 124g, 18K gold, glazed on both sides, case with 18K gold punch and master's punch BL, case band with a lever to stop the jumping seconds, very early Pouzait lever movement in the extremely rare version with gold balance and diamond endstone in combination with the rare complication of a seconde morte, signed original enamel dial in incredible condition, very rare gold hands, later plastic crystal. This is one of the most interesting known pocket watches with Pouzait escapement! Normally these watches are made of silver and very rarely with additional complications. Here we have a piece with original gold case and the extremely rare movement version with gold balance and diamond endstone, furthermore with matching movement and dial signature of the important maker Robert & Courvoisier, intact, service recommended. Provenance: Auction Important Collector's Watches, Hong Kong, Hotel Furama Kempinski, Jun 14, 1995 (https://www.cortrie.de/go/dNR). Pouzait's attempt to combine a lever escapement and a large seconds-beating balance was highly appreciated on the Chinese market due to its spectacular appearance. Later Jacot invented the so-called "Chinese duplex" escapement. The watch here is one of the earliest pocket watches made for the Chinese market.
