Theatrum Civitatum et Admirandorum Italiae. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1663.
First edition – with the plates fully coloured by a contemporary hand – of Blaeu's celebrated town books of Italy in the publisher’s binding. This is the original Latin edition, with volume I as Van der Krogt's variant C (no priority assigned) containing 6 extra plates. The second volume is devoted to Ancient Rome, with splendid views of circuses, theatres and amphitheatres. A large portion of this latter volume dealing with Egyptian obelisks is based on the works of Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). Very rare; sold without the final third volume relating to Naples and Sicily that was issued in a preliminary edition only. Van der Krogt IV-1, 43:211.1L and 43:211.2L.
2 volumes, folio (557 x 355mm). Text in Latin, mounted on guards throughout. General title-pages in Van der Krogt's variants 1B and 2B, part-titles, privilege leaf as found in variant B only, 2 additional engraved titles, 119 engraved plates of views, plans and monuments, comprising: 8 folding double-page plates, 75 double-page plates [including the six extra plates associated with variant 1C], 28 single-page plates and 8 illustrations in the text, all coloured by a contemporary hand, mounted on guards throughout, plate I.11 Bononia complete with the folding extension, letterpress key pasted onto p.296 in vol. II (the folding plates of I.32 Frascati and II.24 ‘Disegno, nel quale si rappresenta l’ordine tenuto in alzar la Guglia’ loose and creased, quite a number of other plates creased with about half-a dozen affected quite severely, a large number of old paper repairs to versos, sometimes affecting a few letters or words of letterpress, a few plates frayed at extremities, occasional marginal tears with some along central creasefolds entering into image, plate I.10 Assisi cut short but without loss, extensive light spotting and heavy browning with volume II more heavily affected). Publisher’s vellum with yapp edges, panelled in gilt, edges gilt, green silk ties (some soiling to covers, extremities rubbed). Provenance: old ink library classmarks in lower margins of titles.
