BOISSEAU, Jean (fl. 1631-1658), editor and publisher – Hugues PICART (1587-1664), engraver

Profil de la ville de Londre cappitalle du royaume d'Angleterre. [Paris:] 1643 [but 1648].

Very rare pre-Great Fire panorama of London. With its viewpoint from the south bank of the Thames, the old St Paul's Cathedral with its square central tower, and London Bridge spanning the river, dominate the scene. In the foreground, the theatres of The Globe, The Bear Garden and The Swan spread westwards along the south bank away from Southwark Cathedral. Originally published in Boisseau's Theatre des citez of 1648 which contained 56 such panoramas, no copies of either the full work, nor of this engraving of London have appeared at auction, with RBH only recording 14 other panoramas of different cities at market. Pastoureau Boisseau I (31); not in Darlington-Howgego, Glanville or Shirley.

Large engraved panorama printed on 2 sheets joined, extending from Garden Stairs in the west to St Olaf's in the east, title within border at top, English royal arms in the sky at eastern end, numerous large ships in the Pool of London, and smaller water craft on the rest of the Thames, 250 x 800mm (plate mark), 373 x 994mm (joined sheets). Provenance: title in ink in a contemporary hand on verso with numbers 67 and 69.
