Lot 14 | CASANOVA - Extremely rare letter of the famous adventurer.
CASANOVA - Extremely rare letter from the famous adventurer and writer Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798), dated 3.1.1791 Dux in Bohemia to Count Antonio Ottavio Collalto (1719-1793). Autographs of Giacomo Casanova, who became famous for numerous love affairs, but also for his spectacular escape from the lead chambers of Venice, are tremendously rare! Casanova was able to work at Dux Castle in Bohemia after 1785. A little later he also began to write his memoirs there. Casanova died at Dux Castle in Bohemia on 4.6.1798. The letter has 3 pages, it is a double sheet with watermark and gilt edges. The letter in Italian is fully transcribed and there is a certificate of authenticity from a renowned handwriting expert. In the letter Casanova wishes Her Excellency "all the graces for the New Year that he desires from God. May all heavenly blessings rain down on him and his entire family." He describes the cold weather that has lasted for eight days at Dux Castle and that he stays in his warm room. In order not to get sick, he resisted all temptations not to go to a ball full of beautiful girls. He goes on to tell of an acquaintance with a woman from Cremona who confided in him about her pregnancy, although she had not seen her husband for two years. He would have advised her the next day to feign an eye disease to her husband and not to regain her sight until after the birth, only to see her husband again then. Casanova digresses with this story to make Collalto laugh. In the letter, Casanova expresses regret over the death of Francesco Foscari and other men, and that the Republic of Venice is not good to its great men. "Now the most illustrious Venetian college (if I dare say so) is sick of great men. There are young men who show promise, but it takes years." He concludes by telling God to protect the Republic, and signs off in deepest reverence as Servant Casanova. Appropriate signs of age and use.
